Boat Challenge

To complete our measurement topic with a focus on mass, volume and capacity we created boats out of tinfoil.

There was a buzz of excitement as pairs planned, shaped and eventually had a boat they thought would survive in the water trial.

Well 10 of the 11 pairs had a boat to enter the trials.  Poppy and Amika had quite the disaster in the creation section.

However there were 3 teams that scored 0 in the trials.

Our champions were Dylan and Deizjahn with a mighty boat that held 18 blocks!

Kea's Bee Zone

At the end of our literacy unit "Emily's Bees" we have created a "Bee Zone" near the orchard.  From our unit we have learned many facts about bees - like did you know they have 5 eyes?

We wrote letters to Mr Wheeler asking if we could plant in the orchard area as this is out of bounds and no one would go standing on our plants.  We wanted the plants to be away from the playground so no one got stung by the female bees.  Then we wrote to shops that sell plants.  This Bee Zone has plants that were donated to us from Lushingtons and The Warehouse.

During our planting session we learned many skills like how to prepare a hole for the plant and how to get the plant out of the container.  We loaned the watering cans from Room 7 to give our new plants a welcome to your new home drink.

We have been learning how to write a variety of poetry styles - haiku, cinquain, diamante and lanternes.

Here are a few examples from our published work. Each student displays their work in class. Our poems are on the wall for everyone to read and enjoy.

Jelly-licious

Maths madness occurred on Wednesday when Mrs Watson handed out packs of jelly.  There were 3 different flavours and the students were almost too excited to understand this was in fact our maths lesson for the day!

Jelly crystals weigh 65gm, but we would be adding 500mL of boiling water to make this into a very tasty treat. We forgot to weigh the set jellies as we were far too keen to eat them.  Maybe we will have to repeat the lesson.....

Water Safety

Included in our swimming week was a session on water safety for when we are in a boat, at the lake or in a river.

It is important we always wear a lifejacket when we are out on open water.  We need to know how to look after ourselves, our friends and our family if an accident occurs.

Check out our videos and photos as we practiced how to get off the lifeboat safely.  We also had to practice hauling people up into a boat.  This was really hard as we had to keep the boat steady and use all our muscles to help each person up.

Capacity in a Cup

Mrs Watson posed the following question, "I have sets of all of these cups and if I need to make 8 cups of tea for myself and my friends which cup set should I use?  My kettle holds 1.8L of water.  Will I only have to boil the jug once?"

In our groups we used the measuring jugs to work out the capacity of each cup.  Then we multiplied that number by 8.

The answer to the question was no.  Most cups could hold 300mL of water.  Mrs Watson would have to boil the jug twice.
