Reading Contracts

Once we have had our guided reading lesson with Mrs Watson, Maureen or Andrena we select our own follow up activity.

There are 12 different options - mostly creative tasks like making posters, puppet shows, or slideshows using devices.  We all love learning on the devices.  So far we know how to use:

  • Canva - creating informative posters
  • Puppet Pal - making our own movies
  • Kahoot - making our own quiz
  • Puzzlemaker - creating our own wordfind
  • Scratch - creating codes to have images move, talk and make sounds
We also have device free tasks such as:
  • Comics - retelling a story in comic format
  • Board game - creating a game about our book
  • Fortune tellers - a quiz in paper format
Check out some of our examples.

Coding Experts

We joined up with the students in Room 3 to help the students and Miss Sloan with their coding skills.   Luckily we are all experts in using the apps "Scratch" and "Code.org".

Everyone was set a buddy and there was almost silence in the room as pairs set to work coding.

Creating Cartoons

One of our reading follow up activities is create a cartoon based on the story that has been read in a guided reading lesson.

To practice how to condense a story into 7 images we read the story "Creatures Choir" by David Walliams.  It is about a walrus who loves to sing, but unfortunately is rather out of tune!

Our revamped classroom.

We have begun our 2022 academic year in a building zone.  Mrs Watson had just set everything up when she got a phone call saying the builders were arriving!!!

They have promised me the walls will be finished by the time we start school.  When it is complete we will have a completely refurbished class, our own cloak bay and our own class toilets.  New cupboards and a sink are also on the schedule.

Community Cultural Showcase

We performed a Tongan dance that commemorates the end of The Battle of Valeta in September 1826, that was fought at Tau'akipulu, Ha'apai in Tonga.

Ma'ake's Mum - Lupe, helped us with choreography and costumes.  The girls had waist mats called ta'ovala and the boys wore manafau.  Malo 'Aupito Lupe.

Probability - a game of chance

In maths we are learning about probability.  We are discovering that some games are not fair, and are working out what makes a game fair or not fair.

In this game we had a pretend ladder climber (a multi link cube) start in the middle.  We placed our counters somewhere on the ladder.  If we tossed the coin and got an even number the climber moved up.  If we tossed the coin and it was odd the climber moved down.  After 20 coin tosses the winner was the counter closest to the climber.  It was lots of fun.

Drumming - African Style

We had an awesome session with Maganui and Ankit when they brought drums to school and everyone had a turn - even the teachers!

We drummed, sang and dance in our session.  It was so much fun.
